Africa's flagship sporting event has featured 16 teams since 1996. However, the competition was expanded to 24 following the approval of CAF's executive committee in July 2017.

The 24 teams have been be seeded into 4 pots based on the CAF National Team rankings. They will be drawn into six groups featuring four teams.

  • Pot 1: Egypt, Cameroon, Senegal, Tunisia, Nigeria, Morocco

  • Pot 2: DR Congo, Ghana, Mali, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Algeria

  • Pot 3: South Africa, Uganda, Benin, Mauritania, Madagascar, Kenya

  • Pot 4: Zimbabwe, Namibia, Guinee Bissau, Angola, Tanzania, Burundi

When is the AFCON 2019 taking place?

The group stage of the competition will commence on June 21 while the final will be played on July 19.

What is the format of the Africa Cup of Nations?

After the 24 countries are drawn into six groups of four teams each, the teams will play in a single round-robin format. The two top teams and the four best third teams in each group will progress to the Round of 16.

The winners will advance to the quarter-finals stage and then to the semi-finals, respectively. Losers of the semis will battle for a second-runners up finish while the winners will feature in the final.
