Juve reaches unwanted milestones with league loss

Juventus reaches unwanted milestones with first Serie A defeat

March 17, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Old Ladies were stunned at Genoa in Sunday's league clash.

Juventus' impressive unbeaten run in the Serie A was halted on Sunday following the 2-0 defeat at Genoa. Massimiliano Allegri's opted to rest some key members of the squad including the mid-week's Champions League's hat trick hero Cristiano Ronaldo but saw his decision backfiring.

Two late goals by Stefano Sturaro and Goran Pandev sealed a shock win for Genoa after Paulo Dybala had a goal disallowed before the deadlock was broken by the host.

In retrospect, the result at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris handed Juventus its first defeat in Serie A since the 1-0 loss to Napoli in April last year. Furthermore, the loss meant that the Bianconeri has lost a game by a two-goal margin for the first time since the 3-1 defeat to AS Roma in May 2017.

That withstanding, they have now failed to win both first and second round encounters with a Serie A side for the first time since the 2012/2013 season. It is worth noting that Genoa drew 1-1 away to the current league leaders at the Allianz Stadium.

Quite astonishingly, Juventus failed to get a shot on target on Sunday. The last time the Italian club achieved such a feat in the Serie A was in May last season.

Despite the defeat, the Old Ladies still sits atop the league table with 75 points after 28 matches. They will enter the international break with 15 points more than second placed Napoli.
