England win SheBelieves Cup, USWNT beat Brazil

Phil Neville's England crowned SheBelieves Cup champs, USWNT leave Brazil pointless

March 6, 2019 By Angela Asante
Because every woman is allowed to believe in themselves and their dream, the SheBelieves Cup has a new champion as England traveled all the way from Europe to dethrone the USA on their own ground.

By the time the USA clashed against Brazil, there was already nothing to play for except to give the home fans a good show. For the first time in the tournament, Jill Ellis' side succeeded in keeping its goal line clean but it was too little, too late for their 1-0 victory to count.

The solitary goal came from Tobin Heath who did all the work in midfield to create a scoring opportunity and attempt and assist before firing the ball at the back of the net on the rebound. A classic goal inside the 19th minute; her 27th on the international stage.

Tobin Heath hugs Pugh and Rapinoe as solitary classic goal sees USA beat Brazil 1-0.

At the other end of the field and roughly 20 minutes from time, goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris produced a reflex save -- not only to deny Brazil from registering a single point at the SheBelieves Cup 2019 but also to redeem the U.S. from what could have been a demoralizing three consecutive draws.

2019 SheBelieves Cup final table standings:

1st - England: 7 points (+4)
2nd - United States: 5 points (+1)
3rd - Japan: 4 points (-1)
4th - Brazil: 0 point (-4)

How did England become 2019 SheBelieves Cup champions?

Earlier in the evening, England stunned spectators by demolishing Canada 2015 runners-up Japan 3-0. Both teams shall meet again on the final matchday of the group stages at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. It might turn into a battle for the top spot in Group D, or a crucial last chance at knockout stage qualification for either side. Either way, a juicy revenge mission will be on the cards for the Japanese in France, after Tuesday's embarrassment.

Phil Neville's team pressed on from the start and Lucy Staniforth's long-range low shot gave England the confidence they needed to further control the game. Keeper Yamane was beaten again, this time by Carney's header midway into the first half. The annihilation was complete in the 30th minute when Beth Mead, who snatched the match-winner with a sumptuous volley from a cross-like position against Brazil on Matchday 1, drove in a solid left-footed shot.

Manager Phil Neville was conscious of his achievement on American soil. The 42-year-old was quoted as saying by BBC Sport:

"It was a sensational performance. I wasn’t that bothered before the tournament whether we won or lost. I just wanted to see an improvement and we go home knowing we are definitely in the right direction."

He added:

"We just keep listening to USA, Japan and Brazil talk about how good we are. But we remain humble, have fun and enjoy moments like this.

"You don’t get many chances to get your hands on a trophy. It is my first as a manager so I am just going to enjoy it."

What is England's match schedule ahead of France 2019?

The Lionesses have upcoming fixtures lined up against 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup hosts Canada on April 5 and Spain on April 9. They are also scheduled to face Denmark on May 25 before taking one last test against New Zealand on June 1.

What are the USWNT's upcoming friendly matches?

Meanwhile, SheBelieves Cup runners-up USA will clash against Australia in Denver on April 4 before entertaining Belgium in Los Angeles on April 7. The warm-up phase to the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup is heating up on the pitch as well as on Live Soccer TV!
