Sarri defends his decision to start Kepa at Fulham

Sarri defends his decision to start Kepa in post at Fulham

March 3, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Italian manager insists he made the right decision with the goalkeeper's selection.

Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri has backed his decision to give Kepa Arrizabalaga the nod to feature in Sunday's win over Fulham. The Spanish goal keeper was dropped to the bench for the mid-week victory over Tottenham Hotspur after refusing to be subbed off in the League Cup Final with Manchester City.

After supposedly learning his lessons which were later confirmed by Sarri in his post-match interview, the 23-year-old started in goal and repaid the faith of his manager with an impressive performance.

However, his appearance in the game was met with criticisms with some fans and pundits branding the ex-Athletic Club shot-stopper's action in the cup final as disrespectful towards the club, Maurizio Sarri and Willy Caballero.

Addressing reporters in his post-match presser, the Blues manager jumped to the defense of his goalkeeper and commended his performance in the win at Craven Cottage.

"There was only one other way: to put him out of the squad for the rest of the season.

"But Kepa is a man and understood, and reacted very well today. I could kill him, but I think this was right.

"I spoke with him and he understood. His behavior during the week was really very good. His reaction today was really very good.

"I know very well the man. He made a mistake. Now is enough."

"But, with another man, yes of course. I could have done it in another way... With him, I know him very well and know very well it wasn't the right solution."

With a game in-hand, Chelsea moved two points within top-four with the win over Fulham.
