The Spanish defender has landed himself among some La Liga greats with his participation in Saturday’s clash.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos made history in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Barcelona as he marked his 42nd El Clasico appearance. After featuring in the mid-week's Copa Del Rey semi-final thrashing at the Camp Nou, the center-back was named in Los Blancos' starting XI but failed to lead his side to avenge the cup elimination.

In his 13 years at Real Madrid, Ramos has gained the reputation of instigating some of the sparks in fixtures involving Barcelona. Nonetheless, previous meetings with the Catalans at the Bernabeu do not exactly come with many fond memories for the Spaniard.

Of all the games played by the Merengues' skipper on home soil, his side has only recorded seven wins against Barcelona while losing 17. The 32-year-old defender has managed four goals in those fixtures.

With 42 appearances now under his belt, Sergio Ramos joined Real Madrid legends Manolo Sanchis and Paco Gento, as well as Barcelona's Xavi Hernandez for the most appearances.

Momentarily, the Spanish defender is level with Xavi and Gento and is just a game behind record-holder Sanchis who amassed 43 appearances between 1983 and 2001 for Los Blancos.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi could also ursurp the ex-La Liga stars to secure a spot in the top-two. The Argentine forward's El Clasico appearance count now stands at 40 across all competitions.
