Kane sets sight on Rooney's goalscoring record

England: Harry Kane sets sight on Wayne Rooney's goalscoring record

November 17, 2018 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Tottenham Hotspur forward has scored 19 international goals so far.

England forward Harry Kane has acknowledged that matching Wayne Rooney's goalscoring record is very achievable although that is not his major focus right now. The latter was honored with a farewell game on Thursday and saw his 120th cap for the Three Lions end in an emphatic 3-0 victory over USA.

Wayne Rooney, who made his national team debut in 2003, made the decision to hung his boot in 2017, ending his international career with 53 goals after 119. The ex-Manchester United ace momentarily stands as England's all-time record goalscorer and second most-capped player, behind Peter Shilton who accumulated 125 caps.

Harry Kane, on the other hand, is slowly carving a remarkable career for himself in the colors of England. The Tottenham Hotspur striker has so far scored 19 goals for the three Lions and recently won the Golden Shoe at Russia 2018 after leading his country to a fourth-place finish.

Having been tipped by Wayne Rooney himself to lay waste of the withstanding record following his 120th cap on Thursday, Harry Kane relishes the prospect.

"It's definitely possible but it's still a fair bit away," he told a media conference.

"I don't like to set my targets that far ahead in the future because a lot of things can happen.

"We'll see over the next few years how many goals I've got and hopefully I'm still fit and healthy and still getting picked by the manager.

"It's definitely something that's achievable but not something I'm thinking about too much right now."

On Sunday, Harry Kane will lead England in its quest to avenge its Russia 2018 semi-final elimination when Croatia comes to town to fight for points in the UEFA Nations League group stage game.
