Henry takes over as Monaco's boss

Thierry Henry names reasons to take Monaco's coaching spot

October 17, 2018 By Oscar Rojas
The legendary French footballer took over after Leonardo Jardim was sacked right before the International Break.

After being linked to several coaching jobs since he left his spot as Belgium's assistant coach behind Roberto Martínez, Thierry Henry has finally joined Monaco as their first-team boss.

The French footballer admitted that the idea of working in England seduced him, but the idea of returning to the place where everything kicked off in his career was too good to miss.

"When the offer came in, it all made sense to me. My heart had a huge influence in my decision. You know how I feel about London, but this is where it all began for me, so..." Henry stated in a press conference.

Coach Henry, who also took the opportunity to unveil his staff, shared which bosses will be his main inspiration as he takes over for the 2016-17 Ligue 1 champions.

"Arsene Wenger is the main reference. He showed me how to be a true professional. Pep Guardiola is also one of my influences. We learnt how to played the game when I went to Barcelona under him," Henry continued.

"For me, a coach is supposed to make people better. First, the player. Second, the player. Third, the player. That's the most important thing, to enjoy the game. Improving players for me is a success," Henry stated.

Monaco sit at the 18th spot in the French top flight after nine games. Their current form is even worse than the one they displayed during the season in which they were relegated, which forced the club's owners to sack Leonardo Jardim. Coach Thierry Henry had a heart-warming message for the departing boss.

"I believe that he will live forever in Monaco's history. All I can say is that my staff and myself wish him all the best," Henry concluded.
