Sir Alex has admietted that his side spoiled a major opportunity after losing their 29-match unbeaten run at Molineaux yesterday.
Victory over Wolverhampton would have opened a massive 7 point gap between Manchester United and Arsenal after the Gunners staged a late collapse to draw 4-4 against Newcastle. However, Manchester United failed to capitalize on Arsenal's misfortune by losing to bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1.

Sir Alex knows it was a great chance to pull ahead. But even he acknowledges that his United team weren't quite up to the task yesterday.

"It was an opportunity,'' Ferguson said.”I said before the game, I do think Wolves are in a false position. "But we had a great start. We made a lot of chances, particularly in the first half.

"Then in the second we were not at the races. Their keeper did not have many saves to make. The pitch was not very good but we didn't make anything.''

Besides, Manchester United were also dealt a blow minutes before kick-off as they were forced to name Jonny Evans on the starting line-up after Rio Ferdinand suffered an injury during warm-up. Ferdinand will be out for almost two weeks and considering that Wolves got both their goals through headers, Sir Alex believes that Ferdinand's injury is a huge loss to the team.

"It was a blow because the experience Rio has got is always vital in games like that,'' Ferguson said.”Normally I would have put Chris Smalling there. He has been playing recently. But we had to pull Chris in as a substitute because Jonny (Evans) had already done the warm-up.''

The Red Devils next face noisy neighbors, Manchester City who will be looking to blow open the title race with a win against Manchester United.
