The Spaniard has followed in the footsteps of Arsene Wenger and has departed from the London club.

After suffering a horrific ankle injury two years ago, Santi Cazorla's football career has never been the same. The 33-year-old midfielder has failed to play in any game for the Gunners since October 2016.

The signs looked promising when he resumed training with the side back in May but he could not manage to sneak his way into any of the matchday squad. Cazorla, who scored 29 goals and assisted 46 times in 180 appearances for Arsenal, took to Twitter to announce his decision to leave the club.

'I am very sad to be leaving after so many great times,' Cazorla declared in a video posted on Arsenal's Twitter account.

'I have loved my time with the club and our time together and the special moments we have shared.'

Arsenal's chief executive, Ivan Gazidis also extended a farewell message to the midfielder via the club's official website.

'Santi is always one of my favourite players to watch,'he said.

'His natural ability with both feet, his speed of thought and movement were central to our best performances in recent years. He plays with a joy and freedom which is very rare.

'We wish him well for the future and thank him for his important contribution to our club.'

Santi Cazorla won both the FA Cup and the Community Shield twice in his six years spell with Arsenal.
