Marseille's record in European finals

Marseille’s European finals record makes for a worrying read ahead of Atletico tie

May 15, 2018 By Ali M.
With the French club gearing up to face Atletico Madrid in the Europa League final, they could end their wait for a European trophy.

Marseille endured a scare against Salzburg in the Europa League semi-final but managed to edge out the Austrian side to book their spot in the final. After winning 2-0 in the first leg, the French side needed an extra-time goal in the second leg to secure a victory.

Les Olympiens can now win this competition for the first time in history. Additionally, they could become the first Ligue 1 side to lift the Europa League.

Unlike Atletico, Marseille’s recent record in Europe has not been flattering. However, the French outfit has a respectable history, having won the inaugural Champions League campaign.

The season was 1992/93 and their opponent in the final was AC Milan. The game ended in a 1-0 victory for the  Stade Vélodrome side, becoming the first team to win the elite continental club competition.

Since then, however, their luck in finals all but disappeared. The Ligue 1 outfit has featured in five UEFA finals in total and the club has won only two of those ties.

The inaugural Champions League winner featured in two UEFA Cup finals in 1999 and 2004, but lost both – 0-3 to Parma and 0-2 to Valencia. There was also a European Cup loss to Crvena zvezda in 1990/91.

In 2005, Marseille won a European title for a second and last time, beating Deportivo La Coruna to lift the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Since then, they have not enjoyed success.

On Wednesday, Rudi Garcia’s men will have an opportunity to put that trophy-less run to an end. All they have to do is beat Simeone’s tough crew.
