Match Preview:
Bayern Munich will welcome the current European title holders to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday for the first-leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final. It was at this same venue that the German side fell to a 2-1 defeat which led to a humiliating 6-3 aggregate loss in the quarter-final of last season’s competition. The victory for Los Blancos spurred them on to retain the trophy for a second successive time.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s industriousness in both legs served up five goals to annihilate the side which had Carlo Ancelotti in their driving seat at the time. Nevertheless, a lot has elapsed since then with Bayern Munich parting ways with the Italian boss and bringing the results-oriented Jupp Heynckes when things seemed to be heading for the south at the beginning of the season.
It’s been a rapid ascendency for Die Roten since the 72-year-old manager - the man responsible for their treble in 2013 - took over the reins. Should things go according to the script, Heynckes could once again lead the Germans to another treble as he has already won the domestic league and has his team in the final of the DFB-Pokal.
But he faces a tough opposition from a side he himself won the Champions League with back in 1998. Real Madrid, led by Zinedine Zidane, has endured a topsy-turvy campaign in the European cup competition this season but has been steadily consistent in the knockout stage having eliminated the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus to make it to the Last 4 stage.
Having missed out on the various cups available at the domestic front, the men in white hope to salvage their season by winning the continental trophy for an unprecedented third time. In their ranks is the competition's topscorer Cristiano Ronaldo who boasts 15 goals in 10 appearances this season.
However, whether they can pull off a historic treble of European titles in a row partly hinges on their collective performance coming up against a wounded Bayern Munich-side.
