Match facts

  • Man City has lost only one of their last 13 home Champions League games (W9, D3).
  • However, their 5-0 Etihad Stadium win over Liverpool in the Premier League was the Citizens’ only victory over the Reds in their last nine meetings (D2, L6) in all competitions.
  • Klopp’s side is looking to become the first team since Man Utd in 2009-10 to beat Man City three times in one season.
  • The Merseyside giant is undefeated in their last five away games in this competition. The last time they went unbeaten for six games (March-December 2005), they won the title.

Preview

Guardiola knows his side has a huge hill to climb when Liverpool arrives at the Etihad Stadium. The home side lost the first leg 3-0 and will need a miraculous comeback to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

Not many sides have come back from a 3+ goal deficit in the knockout stages. Man City looks to become only the third side to do so, joining Deportivo (2003/04) and Barcelona (2016/17).

Unfortunately, the Premier League leader heads into this clash on the back of a Manchester Derby defeat – their second straight loss. Fortunately, Sergio Aguero looks ready to start for the club for the first time in over a month.

John Stones, however, remains a doubt due to a muscle problem. He could sit this game out alongside Benjamin Mendy, who has made his return but lacks match fitness.

Liverpool is hoping top scorer Mohamed Salah is fully fit to start by kick off. They will also be made to sweat over the fitness of Andy Roberton (calf) and Alberto Moreno (thigh).
