Key points as Arsenal and Man City make history

EFL Cup final: Key points to note as Arsenal and Man City make history

February 25, 2018 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Both Arsenal and Manchester City found themselves on distinctive sides of history in the English League Cup final.

The Citizens run off with a resounding 3:0 victory over the Gunners in a game which was labeled to provide a spectacle prior to kickoff. It was all Arsenal at the early stages of the game but Wenger's men were shortly punished by a Sergio Aguero goal for their inefficiency.

Subsequent strikes by Vincent Kompany and David Silva wrapped up the win to ensure that Pep Guardiola finally got his hand on his first trophy in English football.

Here are some notable facts from the game to consider:

  • Manchester City’s three goals in the final were the most the team has scored in the history of the competition.
  • Arsenal has lost by a three-goal margin in the English League Cup final for the first time -  their biggest ever loss in any cup final.

  • The Gunners have conceded 3 or more goals at Wembley for the first time since October 1999. They lost to Barcelona in the Champions League by four goals to two.
  • Arsene Wenger is now level with Sir Alex Ferguson as the managers to have lost the most League Cup finals. Both have lost it on four separate occasions.
  • Manchester City has now won the League Cup on five occasions. Only Liverpool (eight) has won it more.
  • Sergio Aguero took his tally against Arsenal to five goals in five successive games. He hasn’t scored in more consecutive games against any other side since he joined Manchester City.
  • Sergio Aguero has now scored a total of 199 goals in his Manchester City career.

  • A Manchester club has won the English League Cup in each of the last four World Cup years. Manchester United won it in 2006 and 2010 whereas Manchester City won it in 2014 and now 2018.
