Coach Louis Van Gaal has affirmed that Arjen Robben was as important for Bayer Munich, just as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were to Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
Was his statement over-exaggerated? Perhaps no… Arjen Robben made his return to the team in Bayern Munich’s 4-0 victory over Al Wakrah on Saturday. His stunning performance obviously laid the foundation of his side’s trampling win, and Louis Van Gaal wasted no time in raising his attacker to new heights.

“Robben is a very important player for us,” he said. “He is as important as (Lionel) Messi is for Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo (is) for Real Madrid."

Through his proclamation, Van Gaal was seemingly ruling out a move for Robben during this January transfer window. Being in 5th place with 14 points separating them from Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund, it is clear that Bayern Munich have not been having the best seasons. But a relaxed Van Gaal revealed that the German club had set themselves new targets, since the Bundesliga title now appeared to have vanished from their point of view.

"Our ambition is to get to the second place in the league,” he was quoted saying by Goal.com. “We also want to go as far as possible in the Champions League, reach the finals… maybe we can even win it.”

Bayern’s next league match kicks-off on January 15 away to the Volkswagen Arena against VfL Wolfsburg. Having been declared fit by the club’s doctors, Robben is expected to get a feel of the game.
