The Spanish National Team will return to their glory days in order to secure their spot in next year's World Cup, as coach Julen Lopetegui decided to call up former Valencia and Barcelona striker David Villa.
"El Guaje", who has shown massive form during this season with MLS' New York City Football Club, will fight for a starting spot with Alvaro Morata, Vitolo and Pedro. Villa will take Diego Costa's place with La Roja, considering that Chelsea's striker is yet to decide his future and his spot in the National Team could be in jeopardy.
Coach Lopetegui referred to the matter, admitting that Villa's new tenure with the team could be short.
"We're not going to guess the future. We decided to call up Villa now because he can be of some help in these games. We'll make a decision about whether he makes the team or not in the future according to his form and our needs," the coach stated.
Villa's experience could come in handy for Spain, as "El Guaje" is La Roja's top scorer with 59 goals in 97 matches. The player's most recent match with the Spanish National Team took place during the 2014 World Cup, where he scored the opening goal for the Spaniards en route to their 3-0 win against Australia.
Here's Spain's full roster for their upcoming international games.
