The Blaugrana host the Nerazzurri in a do-or-die clash for the Spanish giants as they wish to avoid a second consecutive UEFA Champions League group stage exit.

The UEFA Champions League action continues on Wednesday, October 12, as another eight exciting Matchday 4 fixtures are set to take place. However, one game, in particular, stands out and that is Barcelona's highly-anticipated showdown with Inter Milan as the Spanish giants look to save their European campaign.

Despite their hefty summer spending spree, the Blaugrana once again find themselves in danger of suffering an early UEFA Champions League exit. Last season, Xavi's men failed to make it out of the group stage, finishing third and thus getting demoted to the UEFA Europa League, which they also eventually lost.

This year, Lewandowski and Co. find themselves in third once again after losing two of their opening three games. This means that from their remaining three fixtures, the Spanish giants will likely need two victories.

Unfortunately, two of those three matches are tricky matches, starting with their clash with Inter Milan this Wednesday. Xavi's men lock horns with the Italian giants a week after their battle at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza where, despite dominating the ball, Barcelona were beaten 1-0.

Before that was the 2-0 defeat at the Allianz Arena as Bayern Munich, who they will face on Matchday 5, overcame Lewandowski and Co. in the second round. Injuries are another issue as the Spanish giants are short on center-backs; however, the hosts will look to utilize the home support in their favor.

Domestically, the Blaugrana have been excellent, winning all but one game. That sole stalemate was the 0-0 draw with Rayo Vallecano in the opening round but since then, the Catalan giants have won seven in a row, scoring 20 while conceding only one.

This weekend is El Clasico, which is another tricky fixture, meaning anything short of a victory on Wednesday could set up Barcelona for a rough week or two. Will the Spaniards beat the Italians?

Inter Milan will enter this tie with confidence and belief of pulling off another upset. If they did it in Milan, why not in Catalonia as well?

Hakan Çalhanoğlu netted the winning goal against Barcelona while Skriniar and Co. put in a monstrous performance at the back to prevent Xavi's men from scoring. This means that after three games, the Nerazzurri boast six points while their Spanish rivals have only three, leaving Inzaghi's men in second.

Bayern Munich boast nine points and are top of the table as the German giants look to be the favorites to win the group. However, that runners-up spot remains up for grabs.

Lautaro Martinez and Co. enter this UEFA Champions League tie on the back of a crucial 2-1 victory over Sassuolo during the weekend. Edin Dzeko scored both goals to end his side's two-game losing streak in Serie A, with the Milan giants climbing to seventh in the table.

However, beating Sassuolo and winning at the Camp Nou are two different things. Can Inzahgi inspire his side to a memorable victory at Barcelona's home ground? Tune in to find out.

Team news

Barcelona: Xavi will be without three key center-backs, but that's not all, as Andreas Christensen, Hector Bellerin, Ronald Araujo, Memphis Depay, and Jules Kounde are all injured. Frenkie de Jong, who has played at the back during the pre-season, has returned from injury and can ease this crisis, or the manager could opt for Eric Garcia and Gerard Pique. Franck Kessie has recovered from his thigh issue but it will be interesting to see whether the Ivorian starts or not.

Inter Milan: Inzaghi has his own concerns to deal with as Dalbert, Marcelo Brozovic, Alex Cordaz, Joaquin Correa, and Gabriel Brazao are all sidelined. Lukaku, however, could be back after recovering from his muscular issue. However, a cameo off the bench is more likely, meaning Dzeko and Martinez should lead the line if the manager goes for a two-man attack.

Key stats

  • Barcelona have won their last four home games.

  • Inter have lost their last six trips to the Camp Nou in all competitions.

  • The Blaugrana have lost only twice in 11 showdowns with the Nerazzurri (W6 D3 L2).

  • The last time the Italian giants beat a Spanish club in Spain in the UEFA Champions League was way back in October 2004, beating Valencia 5-1 at the iconic La Mestalla.
