Arsenal have no chance of signing Fulham’s 38-year-old goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer. Wenger had reportedly been eying a January move for the Australian. But the player has extended his contract with Fulham today.
Arsenal and Fulham are to clash against each other in the English Premier League this weekend, and Schwarzer has put an end to any kind of transfer speculations by signing a new deal with the Cottagers although it was believed that the player and the Gunners had agreed on personal terms before.

A few months ago, Mark Schwarzer’s name was in the summer transfer news as Wenger was looking to land his services for around £4M. However, Fulham – who didn’t to sell their shot stopper for a cheap price – couldn’t find a replacement for Schwarzer either.

A week ago, interestingly, Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger came out to confirm that the Gunners will not be busy on the market in January as he told the media:

“My policy is to stick to the squad that I have. We will not be on the market [in January].

“I want to keep my squad and I want to continue with these players. We will not be on the market unless we lose some [players].”

So it appears like Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer – who was admittedly impressed by Arsenal’s interest in him – had no other option but to pledge his future to his current club. Coach Marc Hughes is more than happy to have won the battle as he expressed in a statement according to Sky Sport:

“He [Mark Schwarzer] was obviously very flattered by the interest [from Arsenal]. We are delighted that he has decided to stay here. We can now move forward.”

Fulham are 17th in the English Premier League as the campaign is almost reaching its halfway. The Cottagers are only a point above Wigan, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United who are currently occupying the relegation zone.

There’s much job left for Fulham and Mark Schwarzer. After conceding 18 goals in 15 matches, their fans will hope that this weekend’s English Premier League match against Arsenal won’t bring more troubles upon the London club.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are 3rd in the table with 29 points like Chelsea. The title race for the Gunners is still very much on, even if Manchester United lead the way with 31 points.
