The lack of silverware that is forgivable at some top European clubs – we are looking at you, Arsenal – is not accepted elsewhere, namely Real Madrid and Barcelona. That is why the latter of the two Spanish giants are reportedly already looking for a new manager.
Luis Enrique enjoyed tremendous success during his first two seasons, but third time has proven unlucky. With La Liga slipping away, and the Champions League progression almost out of reach, the Asturian boss might be relieved of his duties once the season ends.
Several names have been tossed around. Here we take a look at those names, and why each respective manager might be helpful.
Ernesto Valverde
Current club: Athletic Club
Best attribute: His knowledge of La Liga
Ernesto Valverde isn’t the most decorated manager that could take over at Camp Nou. However, he is tipped as favorite to replace Enrique should the current boss get the boot.
The Athletic Bilbao boss spent two years with Barcelona as a player. His knowledge of the league is impressive, having spent only three years outside of Spain as a manager – in two different spells with Olympiacos.
Ronald Koeman
Current club: Everton
Best attribute: He is a favorite at Barca
Koeman is revered at Barcelona, and given his managerial skills, could take over the club. Although he has only managed Southampton and Everton in the Premier League, he has enjoyed success in the Eridivisie.
The Dutchman also won the Copa del Rey during his days with Valencia.
Jorge Sampaoli
Current club: Sevilla
Best attribute: His love for attacking-style football
Jorge Sampaoli is a very popular South American manager due to his style of football. During his days with the Chilean national team, he was known for playing an attacking style of football.
This helped Chile win the Copa America, and this has also helped Sevilla climb to third in the league – two points behind Barca. Unfortunately, Goal claim Barca have a three-man shortlist for the hot seat, which Valverde is on, but Sampaoli isn’t on it.
Pep Guardiola
Current club: Man City
Best attribute: He is Pep
According to the Sun, Lionel Messi has asked Guardiola to return to Camp Nou. The Spaniard joined Man City just this season, but hasn’t enjoyed the best of campaigns.
Everyone knows Pep’s love for the Catalan giants. He calls it his home. Juventus, Inter, and Milan are interested in the Spaniard tactician, but have given up on him as it’s clear he would only leave the Citizens for Barcelona.
The Blaugrana have enjoyed success since Pep left, but no manager has had a connection with the clubs and its players like Guardiola. His return could also be beneficial for Neymar, and the manager could do wonders for the Brazilian’s career as he did for a young Lionel Messi.
