Earlier this week, there were reports that Manchester United winger Memphis Depay would join French side OGC Nice revive his footballing career. The Dutchman has been a pale shadow of his former self since moving from PSV Eindhoven to Manchester United in 2015 for £25 million where he has so far made only 33 league appearances and scored twice.
The youngster is now keen on establishing himself elsewhere for the sake of his dwindling career. At PSV, he had 90 league appearances and 39 goals to his name, and was the league's top goal scorer in his last season with the Dutch outfit.
Speaking to RMC, Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere confirmed that the club was interested in the 22-year-old, but he was way too expensive. He said;
"We looked at him, as did a lot of clubs, but it's extremely difficult.
"Depay... it's not a hot one at all. It's a matter that isn't within our financial means.
"You have a club that bought him for a certain amount, and wishes to sell him.
"Manchester United bought him for a lot of money, and they perhaps wish to sell him, but we cannot be in the race in these sorts of cases."
Had the deal materialized, Depay would join Mario Balotelli at the French club. The former Inter Milan, Man City, AC Milan and Liverpool man joined Nice in 2016 and has since regained his old form. He has scored eight goals in the Ligue 1 for the club, who currently sit top of the league after years of PSG's dominance.
