The announcement came after winning Sweden’s best player award for an 11th time.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is an undeniably icon back home, but only now will his legendary status be cemented in Sweden – literally. It was announced on Monday that a statue of their former captain will be built in his honor.

The stats show why Swedish FA’s (SvFF) decision is a no-brainer. The 36-year-old wore his nation’s color for 114 games, scoring 62 goals along the way. Although he wasn’t able to inspire them past the group stages in his last tournament before retirement – Euro 2016 – he has enjoyed unforgettable moments, his four-goal haul vs. England popping into mind.

The statue, which will be 2.1 meters in height, will be built outside the Friends Arena in Stockholm. SvFF announcement their plans during a ceremony in which the Man United striker was named Sweden’s best player for an 11th time.

He wrote on his official Instagram account: “After 20 years of hard work I got a statue in the capital city of Sweden. Who else.

[I am] Super proud, happy, emotional, wow and thank you Sweden.”

It was the 10th consecutive year that the former PSG talisman picked up the Golden Ball, as he was also honored with a tribute video from former team-mate David Beckham.
