It could mean a lot, or it could mean nothing, but Jose Mourinho has made a decision for their upcoming Europa League opener that has sent shockwaves.
The Special One, who suffered his first defeat as Red Devils manager over the weekend, opted to leave club captain Wayne Rooney out of the squad for Thursday’s game.
This decision by the Portuguese tactician comes after a run of disappointing displays by the Englishman, the most recent coming in Saturday’s 2-1 loss in the Manchester derby.
Whether Rooney’s exclusion or his poor form will come to light; regardless, he will join several other first-team members on the list of players left out.
Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan also weren’t called up to the 20-man squad, with the latter being absent from Manchester United’s recent open training session.
Furthermore, Mourinho chose against picking his first-choice full-backs Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw for Thursday’s game.
