Team news

Bayern Munich

Since their last meeting with Dortmund, which took place on May 21st in the DFB-Pokal final, Bayern Munich have made a number of changes. First, of course, is the man on the tactician's bench, with Carlo Ancelotti replacing the outgoing Pep Guardiola. In addition, die Roten brought in two notable signings: promising Portuguese youngster Renato Sanches from Benfica as well as highly-regarded defender Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund.

Both signings, of course, generated a lot of buzz. In Sanches's case, it was his massive price-tag (a total of €80 million including bonuses and other incentives) as well as the fact that he's the first ever Portuguese player to feature for the Bavarian titants. As for Hummels, he earned the ire of already frustrated die Schwarzgelben fans, who have seen several players swap the Signal Iduna Park for the Allianz Arena in over the past couple of seasons. So, given that this match will be at his former team's home ground, the ex-captain will obviously receive less than a warm welcome in Sunday's game.

Sanches, however, will be unable to make his debut due to a thigh injury. Others unavailable for Ancelotti's side include Douglas Costa and likely Jerome Boateng as well as Franck Ribery. In addition, both Holger Badstuber and Arjen Robben, who have repeatedly struggled with fitness problems, are out yet again after suffering another unfortunate injury set-back during pre-season.

Borussia Dortmund

Last season saw Borussia Dortmund rack up an impressive 78 points, but unfortunately it was only enough to secure second place. This summer, Thomas Tuchel's side have been very active in the transfer market as they have had a lot of faces depart and come in. Some of the outgoing players include the aforementioned Hummels, plus İlkay Gündoğan, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and the versatile Jakub Błaszczykowski to Manchester City, Manchester United, and Wolfsburg respectively.

After three seasons, Mario Götze makes his return following a frustrating spell at the Allianz Arena, and could feature against his former club. Like Hummels, Götze will likely be in for some harsh treatment by some sections of the Dortmund faithful, as some of them still haven't moved on following his departure to Bayern back in 2013 - although he has apparently been welcomed back warmly by his colleagues. Additional new players for Dortmund this season include André Schürrle, Ousmane Dembélé, Marc Bartra, and Sebastian Rode, who have arrived from Wolfsburg, Rennes, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.

Unfortunately, Marco Reus will miss out this fixture due to an injury. The 27-year-old has not had the easiest time with fitness, and has had bad luck when it comes to major tournaments - including missing out on this summer's Euro and the 2014 World Cup with Germany due to injury problems.

For the fourth straight season, Bayern are featuring in the DFL-Supercup, and Dortmund will be relishing the chance to make it a fourth straight defeat for die Roten. Will die Schwarzgelben strike first blood in what will be an on-going duel between the two sides this season?
