Team news

Portugal

Portugal's Olympic squad will be looking, naturally, to the success of the senior side this summer as inspiration. Last month, Cristiano Ronaldo and his colleagues finally ended Portugal's long wait for their first ever major title by winning the Euro trophy in France. Historically, Portugal's best ever result at the Olympics was a fourth-placed finish back in 1996.

Rui Jorge's lads were defeated by Sweden during a spot-kick shootout at the 2015 U-21 Euro championship final, during which William Carvalho missed a penalty. A year after that, the Sporting CP midfielder redeemed himself by playing a role in the senior squad's triumph at this summer's Euro tournament.

Udinese midfielder Bruno Fernandes will be serving as Portugal's skipper as the Selecção hope to make an impact in their first Olympics appearance since 2004.

Argentina

After missing out on the Olympics in 2012, Argentina are back and determined to make it a third gold medal. And there's even more incentive for Julio Olarticoechea's side, especially given that this tournament is being played in Brazil - who, of course, are one of Argentina's biggest rivals. Although there are no stars like Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, or Sergio Aguero - as Olarticoechea opted to focus on mainly younger players who ply their trades in Argentina's domestic leagues.

Rising talents like Giovanni Simeone and Angel Correa are players Argentina will be counting on as they hope to re-establish themselves on the Olympic scene after a four year absence.

Broadcast info - Nigeria vs. Japan

Who's playing: After making it to the semi-finals in the last edition, Japan will hope to improve and become the first Asian side to clinch Olympic gold this summer. However, the ambitious and talented side will have to find a way past Nigeria, who will try their utmost best to frustrate them.

What time: Thursday, August 4th at 18.00 PST/21.00 EST/01.00 UTC/02.00 BST/03.00 CET

Team news

Arguably the star man for Japan will be Arsenal's new signing Takuma Asano. The 21-year-old scored 23 goals in 86 appearances for Sanfrecce Hiroshima, and during his four seasons there, played a part in the team winning two J. League titles. Along with Korea, Japan are the most experienced Asian side at Olympic games, with ten qualifications so far to date, but no Asian team has ever won Olympic gold.

Four years from now, Japan will be hosting this tournament, and having made a run to the semi-finals in London - which is their best ever result since that historic run back in 1968.

As for Nigeria, they will be looking to get as far in this competition as possible, with players like experienced midfielder John Obi Mikel and Roma youngster Umar Sadiq making up Samson Siasia's 18-man squad.
