Panama and Bolivia find themselves in a difficult group in this year's Copa America Centenario, but can one or both of them come out victorious? Here is our analysis:

Panama and Bolivia are widely considered as the underdogs of the Copa America Group D, which includes two South American giants Chile and Argentina. These two dark horses are now charged with the task of shocking the two giants, and making it through the knockout stage.

In this group, one of the best ways for either sides to qualify for the knockout stage despite carrying the ‘underdogs’ tag is by forcing at least two wins. A draw in this game at the Orlando Citrus Bowl would minimize the chance of either side to qualify for the next stage of the competition, since they have a low chance of stopping a start-studded Chile and Argentina.

Julio Cesar Baldivieso's men were thumped 4-0 by the United States in a recent international friendly, and are widely considered to be weaker than La Marea Roja. However, they boast of the likes of Jhasmani Campos, who plays for Kazma in Kuwait and winger Juan Carlos Arce, who scored against Panama during the 3-1 loss back in 2011 in an international friendly.

La Verdo will be also banking on Miami-born Alejandro Melean and Yasmani Duk who plays for New York Cosmans.

Coach Hernan Dario Gomez's men, on the other hand, boasts of the likes of Anibal Godoy who plies his trade for MLS side San Jose Earthquakes as a defender and Blas Perez, who plays for Vancouver Whitecaps. Attacking midfielder Alberto Quintero, who plays for San Jose Earthquakes is also expected to shine against the Bolivians.

Head to head

  • The two sides faced each other twice in 2011 in international friendlies
  • Panama won both fixtures by a two-goal margin
  • The last fixture between the two sides was played on a neutral ground

Recent form

Since 2014, Bolivia has played a total of 14 international matches, including friendlies, won only three, drew one, and lost 10. Their most notable win was 3-2 against Ecuador during the Copa America 2015 in Chile.

On the other hand, Panama have played eight international games including friendlies, won four, drawn two and lost two. Their most notable win was 4-0 against Cuba, a result that took them to the Copa America in the USA.
