With teams like Spain, Croatia, and the Czech Republic for company in their quartet, Turkey will be facing a tough task to make it out of their group at this summer's Euro tournament. Fatih Terim's men have nonetheless had an excellent past year, with just one loss in both competitive and friendly fixtures, and will be hoping to continue in this same vein of form as they take on Slovenia later today.
Slovenia
Unfortunately for hosts Slovenia, they will not be participating in the big event in France next week - which would have been their first since 2000. Srečko Katanec's men were unable to find a way past Ukraine in their qualification play-off matches, and despite tying the second leg 1-1, were ultimately defeated 3-1 on aggregate. To date, the hosts have played three friendlies, and their results do not look highly encouraging - one win, one draw, and one loss - all whilst just scoring only one goal.
With the Euro tournament a moot point, Katanec's side have now turned their attention to trying to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. One player that could possibly play some part may be Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak, who featured for the full 120 minutes plus penalties in last month's Champions League clash against Real Madrid.
Turkey
As for Turkey, the return of Barcelona's Arda Turan to action paid dividends for Terim's side. The midfielder played an integral role in the team's recent friendly against Montenegro, as he set up Mehmet Topal for the only goal of the match. With their meeting with Croatia taking place in one week, Terim will definitely be fielding his strongest starting XI for this game in order to iron out any kinks before heading to France.
This will be Turkey's first appearance at the Euros since 2008, when they made a very impressive run to the semi-finals and ultimately finished in third. Interestingly, to get to that juncture, they had to beat Croatia in a spot-kick shootout, and as luck would have it, they will again be facing the very same opponent to kick-start their Euro campaign eight years later.
Eight years ago, Turkey were placed in a very tough quartet, quite like the one they will be dealing with in France starting from next week, and it will be interesting to see how they fare this time around. To date, Turkey and Slovenia have only met once in a prior friendly - and that match finished as a 2-0 win in favor of today's hosts.
