El Tri and Los Charrúas are expected to fight for the Copa América Centenario title, and their group stage match could be a good chance to see what each team has to offer.

A breath-taking match is set to be played at Sun Devil Stadium this Sunday, as two Copa América candidates face each other. Mexico and Uruguay will show their credentials in a rather usual game in this tournament, given that a win tomorrow could boost their chances of success in the competition.

This will be a crucial opportunity for Mexico if they want to show South American authorities the are for real. Due to some restrictions, CONCACAF hasn't allowed Mexico to participate in this tournament with their best team, resulting in some poor outings by El Tri in 2011 and 2015. On the other side of the pitch, Los Charrúas will try to show why they are currently leading the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers, but in order to do that, the team must prove what they're made of without the one and only Luis Suárez.

Mexico's form

Juan Carlos Osorio's stint as coach for El Tri has been wonderful. The Colombian coach is still unbeaten after seven games, with each and every match ending with a victory. Furthermore, El Tri's goalkeepers have kept eight straight clean sheets, helping their new boss to make an impact right after his arrival.

If that wasn't enough, Mexico's players performing abroad had some interesting seasons. Andrés Guardado and Héctor Moreno won the Eredivisie title with PSV, while striker Raúl Jiménez played a crucial role in Benfica's domestic title. But the real star of the lot is Javier "Chicharito" Hernández, who is now two goals away of becoming El Tri's all-time top scorer. Will he accomplish the feat against Paraguay?

The Mexican striker had an amazing debut season with Bayer Leverkusen, scoring a personal-best 26 goals in all competitions for Die Werkself.

Uruguay's form

The South American side gets to this tournament with some unfinished business, after being kicked out of the most recent Copa América in controversial fashion. Coach Oscar Tabárez wants to make an impression in the tournament, but he will have to make do without Luis Suárez, who could miss the entire Group Stage due to injury. With that in mind, Edinson Cavani will have to carry Uruguay's weight on his shoulders, something that is easier said than done.

Since last year's elimination, Uruguay has shown massive form in friendly games and in the World Cup Qualifiers. La Celeste has emerged victorious in six of its most recent nine games, only losing twice during that run. With those numbers, it's no secret why Uruguay has to be considered among the top candidates to lure the trophy back home.

Luis Suárez's absence in this game could prove to be crucial to Uruguay's chances of success in this game.

Head to head

  • This will be the 20th match between Mexico & Uruguay. El Tri leads the series with seven wins, seven draws and five wins for Uruguay.

  • Mexico and Uruguay will meet for the sixth time in a Copa América match. Mexico has emerged victorious in two of those games, adding two draws and one win for Paraguay, Curiously enough, Uruguay's win against Mexico came during their last meeting, a group match in the 2011 edition.

  • Mexico has scored 25 goals against Uruguay, while Los Charrúas have sent the ball into the back of El Tri's net 23 times.
