At least one footballer agrees with the rest of the world: Some of their wages are an insult to the general public.
Manchester United's Juan Mata spoke in an interview with a Spanish TV show called "Salvados" about how much money football players around the world earn, and would even be willing to take a pay cut if there wasn't so much "business" involved in the world of football.
"It's like we live inside a bubble. Compared to the rest of the society, we earn a ridiculous amount. With respect to the world of football, I earn a normal wage. But compared to 99.9 percent of Spain and the rest of the world, I earn a silly amount," Mata stated during the interview.
The player has scored 8 goals and handed out 7 assists in all comps for the Red Devils.
Mata even criticized how football is more of a business than it used to be. The Spanish midfielder stated that this sort of approach has some talented young players thinking about things they shouldn't focus on.
"I love the game. I love training and competing. I'd take a pay cut if there was less business involvement in the sport, but I don't enjoy the business side of football. Clubs around the world should teach players how to deal with failure and not to submit them to that kind of pressure,"Mata added.
"Some of them think about things that are not related to football. Clubs should focus on breeding role models, not rock stars," Mata concluded.
