The current Liga MX champions will try to steal the crown from Las Aguilas, who desperately want to win this tournament and return to the Club World Cup.

After an excruciating tournament, which saw teams from all the region fighting for a spot in the final round, the current CONCACAF Champions League holders will face some tough opposition to repeat their title. On Wednesday, Club América will start their defense of the 2014-2015 title when they visit Tigres UANL, in what will be a tough matchup between two of the most expensive payrolls in Liga MX.

The hosts seem to get in better shape for this match, as Club América will not have a couple of key players available for this game. Furthermore, their home field advantage could prove crucial to decide the outcome of this game. Neither side has lost a single game in this CONCACAF CL edition, so this matchup could be decided by one goal at the most.

América's available strikers will surely represent a good test for Tigres' defense. One of those players will be Oribe Peralta, one of the tournament's top scorers with ten goals. Helping Peralta will be Darío Benedetto, the only player in the tournament's history to score a hat-trick during the final match of last year's edition. The bad news for Las Águilas involve the absence of Darwin Quintero and Michael Arroyo due to their respective bans, while goalkeeper Moisés Muñoz will have to sit this one out due to injury.

The team from the Northern border of Mexico will almost have a full squad available for tonight's match, with Jesús Dueñas being the only absence after picking up a yellow card during the tournament's semi-finals.  The player that could change the course of the game should be Andre-Pierre Gignac, who is considered Liga MX's top performer, currently leading the Clausura 2016 scoring charts.

Head to head

These teams have played 47 games at Estadio Universitario. The hosts have dominated Las Águilas by winning 18 times, drawing 19 games and losing only ten. Back in February, Tigres defeated América with a 4-1 score line, even after allowing the visitors to score first. Nevertheless, their most recent two-leg series was won by Club América two years ago, when Las Águilas won the Apertura 2014 with a 3-2 aggregate.
