On-form Barcelona travel to El Madrigal to face fourth-placed Villarreal on Sunday.

The hosts come into this fixture having gone three matches without a win in La Liga. Their most recent win was 2-0 on aggregate against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League, something that earned them a place in the quarter-finals of the European competition. Unfortunately for the hosts, they have not beaten Barcelona in their last seven meetings in all competitions and given the fact that the Blaugrana are proving to be the best team in the world this season, things could get even worse for their opponents on Sunday.

Additionally, manager Marcelino Garcia Toral has some injury concerns in his squad. Mateo Musacchio and Jonathan dos Santos are both suffering from hamstring injuries while Jaume Costa and Samu have been sidelined due to ankle and foot injuries respectively. To make things worse for the hosts, goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is also doubtful due to a knee injury.

On the other hand, the visitors have gone 38 matches unbeaten in all competitions this eason, and are in strong contention to win the UEFA Champions League, Copa del Rey and La Liga titles. Their most recent win was 3-1 against Premier League side Arsenal in their UEFA Champions League last 16 knockout phase. The attacking duo of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez both found the back of the net, and are expected to lead the attack against The Yellow Submarines on Sunday. To make things even better for the visitors, they have no major injury concerns apart from Rafinha who is suffering from a knee problem and Sandro Ramirez, who has been sidelined due to a hamstring problem. Apart from those two, Luis Enrique has a wide variety of options to choose from when he visits Villarreal.

In their last 13 meetings, Villarreal have lost 10 and drawn three. The Yellow Submarines have lost their last five matches in a row against Luis Enrique’s side and to add salt to injury, the Catalan giants have not lost a match at El Madrigal since October 2007. When the two sides met earlier this season in the reverse fixture at the Nou Camp, the hosts won 3-0.

Given that they had little time to rest after their Europa League fixture against Bayer Leverkusen, can Villarreal bounce back to pull a surprise win or draw against the high-flying Catalans? Only time will tell.
