With this season's Serie A campaign now approaching its final third, all 20 teams in Italian football's top flight will be naturally hoping to pick up maximum points in their remaining fixtures. Some teams are in a desperate bid to stay afloat, others in the hunt for a European spot, whilst a couple are hoping to become crowned champions of Italy this May. Later today, two teams, Atalanta and Juventus will clash at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia with the intent on wrapping up their respective weeks with a win.
Atalanta
For Edy Reja's side, this indeed has been a miserable 2016. How much so? Well, La Dea have yet to win a game since the start of this year and in fact, their last victory was on December 6th when they defeated Palermo 3-0. As a result of this poor run of form, Atalanta have tumbled from a a decent seventh to currently resting in 14th place. And although they are not exactly in danger of relegation, a few more bad results could see today's hosts in that dreaded category.
As such, they will be hoping that Juventus, after their difficult mid-week Coppa Italia tie will have exhausted themselves as they aspire to nick at least a point - or perhaps more. However, the odds are heavily stacked against them. For starters, Atalanta have not beaten Juventus in any game across all competitions since November 19, 2004, when they defeated them 2-0 in a Coppa Italia tie. And if one wants to find the last time they won in Serie A, one will have to go back over 15 years to February 3, 2001 when La Dea was able to grind out a tough 2-1 victory over La Vecchia Signora.
Juventus
Meanwhile, Juventus will be a side under pressure to pick up all three points in this game. Bianconeri boss Massimiliano Allegri surely will have been furious with his team's performance in the Coppa Italia last week that saw them throw away a 3-0 advantage in the first leg. In fact, had Inter been a tad more clinical, the Nerazzurri would have pulled off one of the most impressive comebacks this season after putting on an impressive performance to claw their way back to tie the series 3-3.
However, Juventus were able to scrape by after holding their nerve in a penaly shoot-out to book their place in the final against AC Milan. And with some major games coming up - namely their clash with Bayern Munich for a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals - Allegri will be hoping that the showing against Inter was just a one-off incident and not an indicator of more things to come. Fortunately for the Italian tactician, he will be welcoming back most of his first-team regulars for this game, with key midfielder Claudio Marchisio returning to the side after an injury lay-off.
Giorgio Chiellini, however, will miss this one, meaning that young defender Daniele Rugani will again be handed a spot in the starting XI alongside Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli, and Brazilian keeper Neto will make way for veteran Gianluigi Buffon.
