The Ozil-to-Barcelona rumors are not about to fade anytime soon.

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has been urged to join Spanish giants FC Barcelona this summer by his fellow World Cup winner with Germany Lothar Matthaus. The 54-year-old has insisted that the former Real Madrid man should make a sensational return to Spain this summer.

Speaking to Yahoo Sports, Matthaus revealed:

“It would surely be a gain for him [Ozil], since Barcelona simply is the cream of the crop, especially when it comes to attacking strategies.’’

He added:

“They (Barcelona) seem to look for someone, who can give inspiration there and strengthen the team more from the depth of midfield.

“If next to Rakitic, there was someone like Ozil, who collected about 20 goal assists in the Premier League, which of course someone like Ronaldo and Real Madrid already profited from.

“Of course they are already very aware of that in Barcelona, but I’m pretty sure Arsenal won’t let him go.”

This comes just a few days after Spanish publication Marca reported that the 27-year-old had turned down a new contract with the Gunners, thus paving way for a possible move out of the Emirates Stadium. Ozil has been in sensational form since joining the English side; this season, he is the player with the most assists (17) in the English Premier League.

The goals aside, has been providing some brilliant assists for the Gunners, something that has steered them to crucial wins, most recently against the high-flying Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners won a freekick at the edge of The Foxes' box in the final minute of the game and the midfield wizard stepped up to curl the ball directly towards Danny Welbeck’s head, who blasted it home to give Arsene Wenger’s side three important points that renewed their hopes of winning the Premier League for the first time in over a decade.
