After this past weekend's round of fixtures, many of Europe's leagues will be participating in cup action. In Portugal, Primeira Liga followers will be in for a treat today: a Taça da Liga double-header featuring Arouca and league leaders Sporting CP followed by Moreirense taking on current trophy-holders Benfica.
Arouca vs Sporting CP
Having lost their first Taça da Liga match, followed by a draw, Arouca will be only playing for pride. The hosts, who are ninth in the league table, have hit a rough patch as of late and will be coming into this game having lost their last two Primeira Liga games.
Unfortunately, the odds appear to be stacked against them. They haven never beaten Sportng CP in any of their past five meetings, including a 1-0 reversal back in November. However, Benfica will be coming into this Taça da Liga tie having defeated Arouca 3-1 over the weekend and thus extending their winning streak to eight (across all competitions). The visitors presently sit in second place in the Primeira Liga, just two points behind Sporting CP. Meanwhile, Moreirense are in 14th and have lost three out of their past five games.
Interestingly, this will be the first of two meetings between Moreirense and Benfica in just five days.
