Two Ligue 1 sides with vastly contrasting fortunes in the league will meet up for a round of 16 Coupe de la Ligue clash as Bordeaux welcomes Monaco to the Stade Bordeaux-Atlantique on Wednesday evening.

Currently in 14th place, Bordeaux have only won one of their last five Ligue 1 games - a 1-0 narrow win over plucky side Guingamp - and will be coming into this game having fought to a 1-1 draw against second-placed Angers. It has been a disappointing campaign so far Les Girondins, who finished in a solid sixth place last season and due to the tightness near the bottom of the table, their 22 points put them just three ahead of Guingamp, who sit in 18th.
However, the same packed nature also applies to the middle and upper parts of the table. Bordeaux are currently nine points behind their upcoming opponents - cash rich side Monaco - but they will have to wait to hope to close the gap on some of the higher-placed times until this weekend. First up will be to try to pull themselves out of their funk by recording a win against Monaco, a team, that, interestingly, they have enjoyed some success against in the past.
In fact, the last meeting between the two sides ended up as a 3-1 win for the hosts, and they also avoided defeat to Monaco last season with a 4-1 home win and a 0-0 draw on the road. They will surely be hoping to keep up this decent track record as they welcome a side that has enjoyed a more successful 2015/2016 Ligue 1 campaign so far.

Meanwhile, the visitors sit in third, tied with Angers on 31 points but behind them due to an inferior goal differential. Les Rouges et Blancs, like every other side in Ligue 1 are desperately playing an increasingly failing game of catch-up with PSG, who with each passing win widen the gap between themselves and the rest of the table. As things stand, Monaco, who were thrashed 4-1 by Tottenham in the Europa League but bounced back by beating Saint-Etienne 1-0 last weekend, will find it nearly impossible to catch the rampant Les Parisiens with the Ligue 1 prize really looking pretty certain to remain in Paris for another season.
The visitors also experienced disappointment in European competition. First they were unable to navigate their play-offs to secure a spot in the Champions League, and once in the Europa League, ended up finishing third, thus ending their shot at claiming a European trophy. With only domestic affairs to focus on, Leonardo Jardim's men will be putting quite a bit of effort in trying to win the Coupe de la Ligue as it would gain them at least an entry ticket into next season's edition of Europe's second-tier continental competition.
