After a difficult start, AC Milan appear to be slowly turning things around. The Rossoneri have now won their past two matches across all competitions and overall have been making their way up the table to sit in seventh place. With just one loss in their past five league games, Sinisa Mihajlovic's side will be hoping to continue onwards and upwards as they hope to feature in European competition next season.
Although they have still quite a bit of work to do on the defensive front - with 18 goals conceded so far - they are faring much better off at this juncture than they were under Pippo Inzaghi last season. There have been some positives, with the rise of young goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and a budding partnership between French starlet M'Baye Niang and Carlos Bacca. And having trounced Mihajlovic's former side Sampdoria in last weekend's fixtures, the Diavolo will hope to earn another comfortably win against a side they have never faced before: Carpi.
Carpi
The rise of the Biancorossi has been nothing short of a Cinderella tale. A couple seasons ago, it was Sassuolo first making the break into Italy's top flight; this time around, it's Carpi. And just like the Neroverdi, who struggled horribly in their first season, things have not gone so well thus far for the new kids on the block. With just two wins so far, they sit in 19th place, well inside the relegation zone, but they will be coming into this game having won their Coppa Italia tie with Vicenza, and more significant, an impressive and hard fought victory over Genoa.
So whilst they do not have the long storied history of their upcoming opponents, the minnows will be full of hope and confidence as they will seek to frustrate Milan to hold out for a draw - or at the very least, keep the score-line somewhat respectable. It will also be an interesting game for striker Marco Borriello and defender Cristian Zaccardo, both of whom played for the Rossoneri at one point in their careers.
AC Milan
Despite this still being a rebuilding season for the Rossoneri, Milan are nonetheless viewed as the heavy favorites to earn all three points in this first-ever match-up between themselves and Carpi. Nonetheless, they did have to labor to pull off a win against Crotone in the midweek Coppa Italia fixture and their coach will hope for a sharper performance in this league game. A whole crop of players - Mario Balotelli, Jeremy Menez, Luca Antonelli, and Andrea Bertolacci - are still out due to injury and hence will not be available for the trip.
However, without showing any disrespect to their opponents, anything less than a win for the visitors will not sit too well with Diavolo fans. With things looking pretty congested in the table, a win or loss can see a team jump up a few places or tumbled down a few slots, and for a team desperate to once again grace the European stage next season, these are the kind of games that should finish with all three points in the bag.
Will Carpi pull off an impressive upset in front of their home crowd? Or will Milan continue slowly building on some positive results as we head towards the Christmas holiday?
