Primera Liga long-time enemies are set to lock horns this Sunday in what is famously known as the Lisbon derby.

Benfica’s main mission in the high-profile derby is to reduce the 5-point gap that stands between them and their local rivals Sporting. The derby marks Jorge Jesus’ first return to the Stadium of Light since his arrival at Sporting. Last season, he helped Benfica win their 34th league title. Sporting and FC Porto share the top position on the table with 17 points each after 7 games.

Matching to the top: Benfica have a chance to move closer to the top of the table if they beat Sporting on Sunday

Benfica, on the other hand, are in the 5th position with 12 points and a game in hand. Coming into this fixture, Benfica are the underdogs, having lost 2-1 to Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions league last Wednesday. On the other side of town, Sporting beat their Albanian opponents Skenderbeu 5-1 on Thursday in their Europa league fixture.

Team news

Benfica could play without Nelson Semedo and Nuno Santos, who are currently injured. However, the rest of the squad will be available for selection for the derby. About 3,000 Sporting fans are expected to travel to the Stadium of Light to watch the Lisbon derby.
