What has gone wrong for Memphis Depay at Manchester United?
That must be the question that all the supporters and the player himself must be asking, after the Dutch attacker saw him name axed from the starting eleven and demoted to the bench for the Red Devils’ all-important trip to Goodison Park.
The former PSV attacker, hailed by many as the next Cristiano Ronaldo upon his Old Trafford arrival, was deemed surplus to requirement for the class with Roberto Martinez’s men, and was correctly so, as Van Gaal’s crew cruised to a 3-0 victory, whilst the Netherlands ace rotted in the dugout as an unused substitute.
A series of disappointing performance from the 21-year-old has seen him fall down the pecking order at Old Trafford. In the wake of this, The Telegraph report that Depay has received an alarming warning from the manager against becoming the new Angel Di Maria at the Theatre of Dreams.
The Argentine superstar, after falling out with former club Real Madrid, infamously joined Man United last season for a British record fee of £59.7m only to prove a mega-money flop that was sold to PSG the following season.
According to Sunday People Sport, the player’s ego and eye-catching fashion sense has brought him negative publicity, with club legend Ryan Giggs offering Depay advice on how to adapt to the English Premier League.
Memphis has dazzled the crowds for United on some occasions, including the 7-1 Champions League play-off win over Club Brugge. However, the £25m summer signing has only 2 goals and 1 assists in 11 competitive appearances in all competitions.
