This comes after Altidore failed to score in the first two games against Honduras and Haiti. Then, in the last group stage game against Panama, Altidore was not even called to play in the final minutes. While some may speculate that it is due to a conflict with the coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, it is important to know that the Toronto F.C. forward has been dealing with a hamstring problem for a long time.
"He's the type of player who can always make a difference, that has to work himself into a rhythm," Klinsmann said when he tried to back up the decision of calling him, knowing that there was a physical issue with him.
Things did not get any better for Altidore throughout the tournament and the German manager noticed it. Jozy became one of the three players substituted for the second round of the tournament. Every team can make changes, but is limited to use players from their preliminary 35-man list.
In the case of the USMNT, most people would have expected Jordan Morris to take his spot, but the Stanford star just underwent surgery last week. Altidore's spot will be taken by Alan Gordon. The other two players leaving are Greg Garza and Alfredo Morales. DaMarcus Beasley and Joe Corona are now joining the team.
