The Juventus midfielder was involved in a car crash on Tuesday, wrecking his car and concurring "minor injuries", and was arrested under suspicion of drunk driving.

Chile superstar Arturo Vidal has been detained by police in his home country after allegedly "driving under the influence".

The Juventus man was involved in a car crash on Tuesday, alongside his wife, south of the capital Santiago, wrecking his Ferrari, as images showing the damage dealt to his car and the seriousness of the accident surfaced.

The 28-year-old was taken to hospital, suffering of “minor injuries”.

Vidal, currently on international duty with his national team at the 2015 Copa America, was detained by police, as colonel Ricardo Gonzalez announced the player was drunk driving.

"Because he was driving under the influence of alcohol (Vidal) is being held."

Being given the afternoon off, alongside his team-mates, after the 3-3 draw with Mexico, Vidal was believed to have been heading back from a casino when the incident occurred.

The colonel, however, refused to reveal the amount of alcohol in Vidal's system when detained.

The player later on tweeted to his fans in an attempt to calm fears, saying: "Unfortunately I found myself involved in a traffic accident. Luckily we are all well and quiet . Thanks x worry!"

This is just another case in a long list of controversies involving the Chilean superstar. In 2011, Vidal was expelled from the national team’s training camp after turning up late. Earlier this season, the Juventus man was slapped with a €100,000 fine by his club after getting in a brawl in a nightclub in Turin.

Currently leading Group A with four points, La Roja will play their last group game on Friday, a clash with second-placed Bolivia.
