Since April 11 this year, Alex Morgan has not played a competitive fixture at international or club level. Having just recovered from a mysterious left knee injury, it will be up to USWNT coach Jill Ellis to decide on the striker's playing time against the Australians.
“Alex has been back in training, fully. So, you know, I think she’s available,” the coach told the press.
Alex Morgan personally declared that she is up for a full game on Monday night but as of now, it is not clear if she will be picked in the Starting XI or if she will be given the opportunity to become a supersub.
“Obviously we’re going to look at what our needs are, but I’m just excited now that she is back in 100 percent training – looking great, sharp.”
“She’s worked very, very hard on her fitness [in training], but it’s a little bit different from the game,” Ellis stated on Sunday.
“We’ll meter that and monitor that; as far as having her available, yes, very much so,” the manager continued.
The 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup commenced on Saturday with USA's continental foes Canada doing just enough to steal maximum points away from China. Meanwhile, tournament favourites Germany issued a strong statement by trouncing Ivory Coast 10-0. Such results have reminded the United States to avoid complacency if they want to start and finish the competition on a great note.
