La Albiceleste wants some payback after their lousy 2011 Copa America display. Will they be able to live up to the expectations, or will they fail like four years ago?

Whenever an International tournament arrives, Argentina's National Team has to be considered one of the top candidates to win it. Even more, when that tournament is CONMEBOL's Copa America, La Albiceleste will always be among the three or possibly four contenders to take the trophy home, although their last performances in this tournament have been rather disappointing.

With one of their most talented generations of all time, Argentinean players need to back all that fame and glory with some silverware for their country, mostly since they haven't been able to win the Copa America in 22 years. Right now, Argentina holds the second place in FIFA's World ranking, and the No. 1 spot among CONMEBOL's teams. Will this finally be the time when we see Lionel Messi lifting a trophy with his National Team?

What does history say about Argentina's Copa America performances?

La Albiceleste is one of the second most prolific team in Copa America's history. With 14 trophies won, Argentina is only one win away of matching Uruguay's 15 conquests, after missing out a huge chance in front of their home crowd. Gerardo Martino's team owes its supporters a fine performance, since the last time they won the tournament goes back to 1993, when the Argentineans defeated debutant Mexico 2-1. Since then, they have only managed to reach the final match twice (2004 and 2007), losing both times against Brazil.

Los Argentinos own a series of records when talking about Copa America history. They have won more matches than any other team (112), scored the highest amount of goals (427), and more importantly, the Argentineans are the only team to win the Copa America tournament three times in a row (1945-1946-1947). After their quarter-final exit last time, Martino's side needs to make an impression.

Argentina's top players to watch

We don't know if you've heard of him. He plays in La Liga, and this year has scored 41 goals for his club. Oh, yes, he has won four consecutive Ballon D'Or trophies, and he is considered among the best footballers of all time. His name is Lionel Messi, and his compatriots will want him to show all those qualities he has shown while playing for Barcelona, but this time, with La Albiceleste. Last year, Messi had a complicated World Cup, and was controversially named the Best Player of the World Cup after a baffling display in the Final game. Messi is starting to run out of excuses to justify his below average performances with his homecountry's team, and this might be the chance he was waiting for to show his best form and finally give Argentina some glory with him on the pitch.

Messi needs to show his class with Argentina's National Team. Will he be able to do so this summer?
