The RFEF announced that La Liga would be suspended starting May 16. It would affect all competitions.

Efforts are being made by the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (LFP) to avoid the suspension of La Liga and the Copa del Rey final. They have until May 16 to agree on terms with the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF) so that all Spanish competitions continue after such date.

The first step for the LFP is to hold an extraordinary general assembly next Monday in the hope to avoid the strike. This would be a direct response to the decision that was taken by the RFEF in its general assembly on Wednesday. The LFP released a statement on their posture of the controversial announcement.

"Regarding the decision adopted by the RFEF's General Assembly to indefinitely suspend all football competitions at every level, the LFP states that it has taken the corresponding legal actions in defence of the rights and legitimate interests of the clubs, as well as the rights of the competitions that it organises and that have been grossly affected by the aforementioned decision by the RFEF."

The statement also adds that the decision taken by the RFEF is unconstitutional as it is the LFP the organization with the right on deciding what happens in Spain's professional competitions. The decision taken by the RFEF would affect 600,000 players across 17 regional federations, equaling 30,000 suspended matches.

Real Madrid would hardly have a chance to catch up with Barcelona as it would affect two of the last four games in La Liga. It would also avoid Barcelona from reaching the treble in the final they have scheduled against Athletic Bilbao on May 30 at Camp Nou.

The players' union (AFE,) stands by the decision of the RFEF. Lionel Messi doesn't have a problem with the strike taking place if they feel that it would be in the best interest for the players. La Pulga had spoken about the issue ahead of Los Cules game against Bayern in the Champions League.

"We the players support the AFE in the topic regarding television rights," Messi said. "The players are with them in what they say."

The reason for all this mess is a new television agreement that gives the top two divisions in Spain a more even sum of cash from their revenue. The AFE is against the players not being taken into consideration nor benefited from this deal.
