According to the legendary Man United boss, Ronaldo could still be the star that he is today even at Millwall, but believes Messi is just "a Barcelona player".

Legendary Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson weighed in on the Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate, and had a not-too-pleasing verdict for the Argentine and his legion of supporters.

The question was put up to the Scottish tactician on the BBC, and the 73-year-old spoke highly of the player he signed from Sporting at the age of 18.

Whilst Ferguson admitted fans of the Barcelona superstar have a concrete argument to call Leo the best ever, he feels the scales weigh in the Portuguese star’s favor.

Why? According to the former Red Devils, Cristiano can shine at any club, even Doncaster Rovers, whilst La Pulga is only “a Barcelona player”.

Ferguson said: “Many people quite rightly say Messi and you can't dispute that opinion," he said. "[But] Ronaldo could play for Millwall, QPR, Doncaster Rovers, anyone, and score a hat trick. I'm not sure Messi could do that.

"Ronaldo's got two feet, he's quick, great in the air and brave. I think Messi is a Barcelona player."

It has been almost two seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson retired from football. The most successful manager in the English Premier League history, when asked what he misses from the game the most, he revealed:

"The camaraderie, humour, mickey-taking and winning -- we're all here to win."
