This comes as a surprise to many who thought the Spanish-international would be headed to the MLS by the time summer comes around. New York City FC was making a strong push for it to happen. David Villa also plays for that team.

Xavi is set to take the place that Raul Gonzalez Blanco left open when he left for New York. Each year that Xavi plays for the club, he will be earning 10 million euros. There is an option in his contract to extend it one more year.

As part of the deal of establishing in Qatar, he will get the chance to work on his coaching license. He will do so at the Aspire Academy with a group that is managed by Iván Bravo.
