The manager decided to substitute the Italian striker in the 82nd minute of the game. He had already missed a chance from the spot in the previous game.

In a night where almost nothing went Liverpool’s way, Mario Balotelli’s performance was no exception. With the aggregate score tied at 1, Brendan Rodgers decided to the Italian out of the field in the 82nd minute.

The striker, who usually steals the show by just standing on the field, gave the world another reason to talk about him as he walked away. He just did not seem happy with Rodgers decision by staring at him as he walked past the manager.

The picture speaks for itself. A decision that Rodgers might regret, since the game went to overtime and then to penalties, where Besiktas came out on top. Anyway, Balotelli had failed to score from the spot in the first leg of the match.

The head coach was obviously upset for the loss that leaves Liverpool out of the Europa League competition. It is the first time the club lost a shootout in any European competition.

“I thought we created opportunities in the first half to make it really difficult for them,” Rodgers said, acknowledging accuracy by his strikers.  “I’m disappointed, of course, to go out in the manner we did,”

A possible explanation of Rodgers' decision is that Balotelli had received a yellow card 11 minutes into the game. Or was it a lack in accuracy? All we know is that his next chance to score comes in less than 60 hours against Manchester City.
