Ugly, chaotic scenes at AFCON semi final in EQG

STONES, CHOPPERS & TEAR GAS: Ghana's semi-final win over Eq. Guinea marred by chaos

February 6, 2015 By Mutembei Kevin
Equatorial Guinea proved to be awful hosts as chaotic scenes of violence enshrouded AFCON 2015's second semi final at the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo following Ghana's victory over the hosts.

By the look of things, Equatorial Guinea will be very lucky to be allowed to show up at the next Africa Cup of Nations after the terrible chaos that erupted during and after their semi final exit at the hands of Ghana on Thursday.

At half time, after Ghana had scored two goals to grab an invaluable lead, the fans of Equatorial Guinea hurled bottles and other objects towards the players’ tunnel, making it almost impossible for the Ghana players to exit the field. Riot police had to intervene, forming a cordon for the players to walk into the tunnel.

After things looked like they had calmed down in the second half, fracas erupted again in the second half following Ayew’s third goal for Ghana. This time, Nzalang Nacional turned to the Black Stars’ fans, pelting them with stones, bottles and all manner of objects.

The police had to bring in a chopper and fly it low in order kick up debris and disrupt the riots. Ghana’s fans fled the stands and took refuge at the edge of the field.

Ultimately, after all the interruptions, Ghana was able to record a 3-0 score line to advance to the 2015 AFCON Finals. The chaos in the stands could do very little to deter the Black Stars from their ‘helicopter’ celebrations.

Ghana celebrated their victory in the midst of the chaos:

The four-time winners will meet the Elephants of Ivory Coast on Sunday Feb 8th to determine who takes home the glittering CAN trophy.
