With a squad inspired by the likes of El Hadji Diouf. Senegal were able to make the quarter finals of the 2002 World Cup, upsetting France along the way. Surprisingly, this success they have had on the world stage has not been replicated on the African stage. The West African country has made 12 appearances in AFCON and the closest they have ever come to scooping up the prize was a second-placed finish in 2002. As per the rankings released by FIFA on January 8th, 2015, Senegal are #4 in the continent and #35 in the world.
How Senegal qualified for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations
Senegal qualified from Group G on November 15th 2014 as runners up behind leaders Tunisia. Their triumphs in the route to qualification started with a memorable 2-0 victory over the Pharaohs of Egypt. Botswana were also put to the sword with a similar score line at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone.
