Stoke City were sharp to complete a transfer deal with Sunderland for the signature of striker Kenwyne Jones ahead of the start of the English Premier League season.

Kenwyne JonesThe Trinidad and Tobago international is now set to make his debut as a Potter on Saturday when Stoke City take on Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Kenwyne Jones completed his move to the Britannia Stadium earlier on Wednesday. Having been signed for £8m, the striker now holds the club’s record transfer fee which was previously carried throughout last season by £6m signing Robert Huth – formerly from Middlesbrough. Speaking about his move to Stoke City, the Trinidad and Tobago player declared:

 

“That’s an exciting new chapter in my career. I want to do my best for a club that has clearly had great success since I was last here [on loan]. I’m looking forward to the challenge of helping Stoke build upon the progress it has made over the past two years in the Premier League.”

Indeed, Stoke City can look back at their last two English Premier League season with pride. They occupied the 12th position at the end of the 2008/2009 campaign and went one better last season. Stoke City’s expectations this year are based on improvement and manager Tony Pulis is confident about the ability of Kenwyne Jones.

“We need goals in our team. Stoke City manager Tony Pulis

"We also need strong competition among our strikers if we are to continue improving at this level. Kenwyne will give us that,” the Stoke City boss said.

“He did a smashing job for us when he was here on loan. He was very young back then. But I believe that he has the best years ahead of him as a top striker.”

So, all eyes will be on Kenwyne Jones this weekend as Stoke City meet Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium. The striker will have the opportunity to overturn the comments of Sunderland Coach Steve Bruce who explained how frustrated he and Black Cats’ fans were at the player’s inconsistency.
