Not many people will be expecting anything spectacular from Equatorial Guinea at this year's AFCON. But having won the right to host the prestigious tournament, the hosts will look to put in some performance.

Nzalang Nacional, as the team is popularly called, have made only one appearance at the tournament so far – in 2012 when they reached the quarter finals. The second time will be at this year's showdown, for which the country automatically qualifies as hosts. Equatorial Guinea is ranked 118th in the world by FIFA (as per the latest rankings released on January 8, 2015). On the latest CAF FIFA Ranking Table, EQG are ranked a respectable 39th.

How Equatorial Guinea qualified for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations

It is almost impossible to say if Nzalang Nacional merit the chance to play in AFCON 2015. For starters, the team was disqualified during the qualifiers for fielding an ineligible player, denying the world the chance to fully assess their footballing talent. Then, because of Morocco's refusal to host the tournament and Guinea's subsequent selection as the host, the team qualified automatically as the hosts. Perhaps the sudden sacking of coach Andoni Goikoetxea Olaskoaga on 6th January 2015 and his subsequent replacement with Esteban Becker with just 11 days remaining to the country's first game highlights the shambolic state of affairs in the country's football department.
