A meager four points had been registered from seven attempts. The fans had deserted the team. Alan Pardew's tumultuous spell with the club on Tyneside was seemingly coming to an end. Yet, suddenly, six points were registered. A win over Manchester City in the Carling Cup was also placed in the fixtures list. The last three matches have listed the spirits of all involved with Newcastle United including the fans, the players and Alan Pardew. The change in fortunes started with a 1-0 win over Leicester. Surprisingly, after that victory, Newcastle beat Tottenham 1-2. Beating City 0-2 in the cup was the icing on the cake in a wonderful week.
Liverpool, in comparison, have had no such turbulent periods this season. However, their problem is entirely different. Without Luis Suarez in the side, they have appeared rather mediocre. A 0-3 defeat to Real Madrid showed last week that Liverpool are not ready to compete with the cream of the crop of European football just yet. The result was followed by a 0-0 draw against Hull in the Premier League. Nonetheless, last season's title contenders will come into this match on the back of a win, having beaten Swansea, 2-1, in the Carling Cup.
Both sides have injury worries to tend to. Newcastle's list is definitely shorter than what it was earlier in the season. The return of players has coincided with the return to form of the team. Davide Santon, Papiss Demba Cisse and Siem de Jong are out of this one for them. Everyone else is available. Mamadou Sakho, Jon Flannagan and Suso are out for Liverpool. Daniel Sturridge, a player who can add extraordinary talent to what is appearing increasingly a mediocre side, is out as well. Jose Enrique is a doubt for them.
