Landon Donovan won’t be able to play his last California derby against former club San José on Sunday after being suspended for a fifth yellow.

Landon Donovan saw his fifth yellow card of this season during the first half of LA Galaxy 2-2 draw against Montreal Impact on Wednesday. The 32-year-old was cautioned in the 44th minute after arguing with referee Hilario Grajeda, following a controversial play that led to Impact’s second goal of the night.

In the heat of the match, Landon couldn’t help to protest against the decision of not calling a clear handball but after the game the player recognized that he should have let it go.

“I'm frustrated at myself,” the forward mentioned. “I should know better, and I should have let it go. It's frustrating when we see a pretty clear handball that's not called, and then they go down and score.

“As a player in a game, it's frustrating, but I should know better, and I should have done a better job letting it go.”

After being suspended for one match, Donovan will have only six games left in the MLS as he announced last month that he would be retiring from professional soccer at the end of the current season.

Donovan’s first team in the MLS was the San José Earthquakes, where he played from 2001 to 2004 before joining the LA Galaxy. Unfortunately, his fans in the Bay Area won’t have the chance to give him a proper farewell on Sunday.
